In October we were learning about 2D shapes. As part of this topic we solved some tangram puzzles. Even though some of them look simple, they weren’t easy! What makes tangrams super tricky, is the fact that you have to use all of the shapes! o edit.

It’s week five of our Marathon Kids challenge in Olya's 5th class. The children have been building on their running endurance and learning all about the benefits of exercising in all aspects of life. They have been doing daily runs and have been putting a lot of effort into this. So far they have ran 14,400m!

Ancient EgyptThis year started off with a bang, as we started learning about Ancient Egypt. This has definitely been one of the class favourite topics so far! There was just SO much to learn about, and we explored different aspects of the Ancient Egyptian societies through art, science, history and drama, as well as using our chromebook time slots to do research for projects. Everyone completed their own projects, on a selection of topics they chose themselves (we made a big chart of things we were curious about) so all of the projects were unique and FABULOUS! We learned about everything from hieroglyphics and clothing, to housing and curses. These were displayed in the classroom and in the corridor, check some of them out below! We also created lots of Ancient Egypt inspired art projects. First up, we explored various paintings and artworks from this time to create pharoah self portraits. The next few weeks complied of using clay to make tile “cartouches” which displayed names in hieroglyphics. Drawing the hieroglyphics was definitely the hard part, as not only did they have to look as accurate as possible, we all had to change the spellings of our names to their phonetic spellings to be REALLY accurate. These were really fun to make, clay is always a big hit and we managed to have barely any pieces break - woohoo! For science, we also performed an experiment where we used salt and baking soda to mummify apple slices! We learned about the process of mummification in Ancient Egypt, then decided to try it for ourselves! Everyone got an apple quarter that they could carve a face into, and then these were placed in the cups and covered in the mixture, before being left for a week. There was also one apple slice left uncovered in a cup as a control, so we could compare the two. Check out the process of how we did it, as well as some of the results! Be careful, they’re kind of gross! We usually tie our drama lessons into whatever topic we’re covering in SESE at the time, so we spent the last few weeks unravelling the mystery of the pharoah “Panini the Great” (the pupils chose the name!) and using clues, hieroglyphics and our imaginations to find his tomb, treasures, and avoid the “curse”! Other projectsOther projects As always, we have been very busy in 4th class! It really seems like there’s never a dull moment, but we have a lot of fun for sure! To start off 2022, we made these gorgeous New Year scratch art pieces. We also learned about Chinese New Year, and made this lovely garland to celebrate the year of the tiger!  Once we finished learning about ancient Egypt, we were exploring life in 18th century Ireland in History. The pods collaborated to create jamboards filled with interesting facts they learned about this time period - you can read through them below! We also took inspiration from our history topic to create Georgian inspired houses out of shoeboxes and other materials. A big thank you to everyone who sent in the HEAPS of cardboard we managed to get out hands on! This was such a cool task to see how everyone worked together to solve problems and use their creativity to create such cool houses! Creative bits and pieces!Once again proving that the 4th class in room 16 are super creative, we have been slowly adding to our class mascot - our avocado tree! “Pablo Jr” has wholeheartedly been adopted by the class, with pupils pitching in to keep him watered, as well as kitted out in football boots and and a mask. Friendship week One of the ways we celebrated friendship week in our class was by making this cool friendship chain! Everyone wrote their name on a slip of paper, and they were passed around to everyone who wrote something nice about that person. It was lovely to see everyone’s reaction to getting theirs back! Also, I was gifted with this lovely banner that my gang made in secret, before giving it to me at the end of the day. We were all feeling the love! In PE, we had so much fun honing athletics skills, and getting to practise new ones! Everyone tried loads of different activities, including long jumps, javelin throwing, as well as many others. One of the most entertaining activities was definitely relay racing, as the competition was very intense and very funny when students made up “weird” relays for the class to compete in. These included army crawls, crab walking and “grandpa walking”. In art, the season of winter was a big inspiration for all of our artwork this past December, and we undertook many different winter themed art projects. We used paint to create lovely winter sky silhouettes, which was a great opportunity to practise paint mixing and blending skills. We also used chalk to create fabulous pictures of the Northern Lights, before making unique snowflakes out of paper. We used all of these pieces to turn our corridor into a winter wonderland! Earlier in the month we also created these fab landscapes inspired by the work of Xavier Castellanos, where the focus was on using bright, bold colours and strong shapes and outlines. A big focus in our class recently has been on building and using our debating skills. We have been exploring different topics to build arguments for and against the motions, working as a team to research and build arguments. Pods then compete against each other to try and sway the rest of the class, who are acting as our judges - scoring each group anonymously. It can be tricky and takes a lot of courage, but we have been having a great time with it! Tuesday mornings are a very popular time in our classroom, as it’s when we have our time slot to use the chromebooks! We use the chromebooks to do many different activities, some of which this month have been researching arguments for our debates, or having a fierce competition on kahoot to revise topics and things we’ve done so far this year! Our class were so lucky to have been chosen to take part in the "Make your own Comic" workshop that was taking place in Tallaght Library as part of their ComicFest. Classes were chosen to take part via a lottery, and we luckily were selected! We were all excited to be able to go on a trip outside of the school again. Once we got to Tallaght Library, we were welcomed into our room and met with Sarah Bowie, an Irish illustrator who was doing the workshop with us. We developed characters based on prompts that were chosen randomly: mean, beardy, elf. We built lots of interesting characters around these prompts, and then used the additional words texting and pool to develop our stories. We all made mini comic books, which everyone then took home! It was such a fun experience, and so exciting to be able to get out of the classroom for a few hours!  In maths, we have been doing lots of hard work on data. We have gotten lots of practise in collecting and analysing data, and also creating and reading graphs. In our class, we conducted lots of surveys with our whole class. We also created a survey about favourite animals and invited other classes to answer, and we created a range of graphs to represent the data we gathered.We have been learning about life in Medieval Ireland in history recently. To get us started, we used the school chromebooks to explore various resources showing how Dublin has changed over the years, and making note of anything interesting we found! The most interesting one we found was the Dublinia website, which has a slider to show how Dublin has grown and changed, you can check it out here! We collected some of the most interesting facts on a Google Jamboard. In October, we did lots of research and activities when we were learning about Mexico for geography. One tradition we learned about was Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated from October 31st- November 2nd. We created these skeleton artworks, using Dia de los Muertos decorations as our inspiration! We were very busy in the month of September, creating lots of artwork to decorate the walls of our classroom. We created line art of our names for a display of our class group, check them out below! We also practised colour mixing to create the backgrounds for our autumn birch trees, which we finished off with recycled newspaper and markers, and they turned out lovely! In September, we were learning lots of information about sound in science. We did lots of activities to explore how sound is created and how it travels. One of our favourite experiments was when we used cups, string and paperclips to make “phones” and tested them in various parts of the school. We also tested if they worked in different conditions, by using them indoors and outdoors, around corners, whilst moving and when the string is droopy or tangled.
