We had our last P.E. lesson yesterday and enjoyed using our equipment for the last time this school year. We have also been learning a little bit about space this week and completed two fun pieces of art. We used crayon and black paint to create our first piece. You use the crayon first and when you apply the paint after, the wax from the crayons resists it. After that, we created some space art using objects from our homes that we used to print shapes. Check them out.

We have been having a lot of fun during our art lessons. We have been learning about optical illusions and looking at the work of optical illusion artists. We created our own optical illusion line art over the last fortnight. We used straight lines to create the illusion of movement. Have a look at our work. Moving Line ArtVanishing Line ArtThe ArtistsThis week we had an invention challenge! Each pod designed a new toy and wrote persuasive advertisements to try and sell it. We used empty cereal boxes to design the prototype box for our new products and acted out advertisements during drama. We had great ideas and had great fun! We have been learning all about the country Australia during our lessons. We have been enjoying using our class atlases to look at the geography of Australia and Oceania (the continent you will find Australia in). We know that Australia is an island and has many different landscapes like deserts, rainforests and beaches. Did you know that Australians call the desert the outback? During our History and Learn Together lessons, we have been learning about the Aborigines who are the indigenous people of Australia. The Aborginal people first arrived in Australia 60,000 years ago and have been living there ever since. The Aborigines have a rich culture. Dreamtime is the name for their spiritual beliefs. Dreamtime has been passed down through the generations through stories and amazing artwork on walls, stones and objects. We have been looking at examples of Aboriginal art and have tried recreating the style in our art lessons. Check out our work below. We have tried to use dots like the examples we saw and include symbols and pictures from the landscape.
We had a busy day in our classroom. We finished our Picasso art projects this afternoon. We recreated our cubist style oil pastel portrait in a collage style using coloured paper. We also had fun during Golden Time. Check out our pictures. :-) Picasso PortraitsGolden TimeWe are really enjoying being back in our classroom! Today we started an art project. We are learning about the artist Pablo Picasso. Picasso was experimental in his approach to art, often painting a common object or person from lots of different angles in one picture. This is called cubism. We looked at one of his famous painting "The Weeping Woman." Rather than create an exact portrait of the woman’s face, Picasso used jagged shapes, bright colours and thick black lines to present her face and emotions. We tried to mimic this style today to create our own cubist style portraits using oil pastels. Check them out!
We were very excited to put our finished rocks out into our school garden this week. We really enjoyed the project. Thank you Student Council for suggesting it. :-) We have just finished our rock art project. The student council have organised that the whole school participate in an Our School Rocks project. Each child in the school will bring a rock to school and decorate it. We will then place the rocks in our school garden. We really enjoyed painting our rocks this week and we have them ready in our classroom to put in the school garden soon. Our Finished RocksRock Painting in ActionBuddy ReadingWe have been really enjoying our Big Cat readers. Martha gives each group a new book on a Monday. On Thursday, before we give them back to Martha, we each get a chance to read some of our book to a buddy. It is a great chance for us to practise our reading and to hear our classmates read as well. We have had a great week in school together. This week we have been reading about a real life Irish giant called Patrick Cotter O' Brien who lived over 200 years ago and was 3 metres tall! Learning about Patrick inspired us to imagine that we were giants. First we drew pictures of what interesting and strange things we could do as giants. Then we did some drama together in our pods. We created imaginative scenes in which we acted as giants and we showed our performances to the class. They were really funny! After that, we borrowed ideas from every performance to create a timeline of the day in the life of a giant. We imagined a giant on their first day of school with people who were much shorter than them. We planned and wrote out giant diary entries. They are sounding great and are almost finished! We will share them with you next week. In our Maths lessons we have started learning about lines and angles. We learned about vertical, horizontal and parallel lines. We used this knowledge in our art lesson. We used our ruler to draw lines to create some very cool pictures. Check them out. Today we finished our rainbow drip art class display and we packed our gratitude letters into envelopes to bring home! We have been practising gratitude for the last couple of weeks in our classroom. We practise gratitude by taking time to notice and talk about the things and people that we are grateful for. We decided to each write a letter to somebody in our lives that we want to thank and we are really looking forward to delivering them. Enjoy our pictures! Wow what a great first half term we have had in Third Class! We have learnt lots and had lots of fun together. Everyone deserves a rest this mid-term break. We look forward to updating you again after the holiday.
