We have been learning about an English rock band from the 1960's who started in Liverpool in England. They are are a very famous band called the Beatles. Here are two of their songs which we are learning at the moment. Enjoy!!
In February we spent a lot of time learning about old toys that our parents, grandparents or an older person may have played with when they were 5 or 6.
As part of home learning all senior infants were asked to discuss this topic with an older person. We have been enjoying discussing the differences between toys which we play with and toys which people older than us played with. Many of the toys in our classroom were our teacher Mary Treasa's toys when she was younger and some of them belong to her brother and sister too. We also decided that many of the toys from the past are still very popular now and we love playing with them. We found it challenging to sort them into groups. .Tricky Words-Information for parents!
Check your child's Home Learning folder for their Tricky Words bookmark. So far we have completed the blue, yellow and red sets of Tricky Words. Tricky words are those words which cannot be sounded out correctly using the Jolly Phonics sounds. The only way these words can be read and spelt correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise. By introducing the tricky words slowly, possible one or two a week, your child is more likely to be able to read and spell each of the words correctly. The Tricky Word Wall Flowers (Jolly Phonics) are a lovely way to introduce a new word and make learning fun and enjoyable for your child. Once you have introduced the tricky word and practised it, reinforce this word regularly when sharing picture books and reading together. When helping your child to learn to spell the tricky words you may decide to use the 'Look, Cover, Write and Check' method. This involves first looking at the word and identifying which part is tricky, covering the word, writing it and then checking the spelling. When practising the spelling of tricky words aim to make it a fun, enjoyable activity, perhaps by writing the tricky words in sand, paint, shaving foam or glitter. Once your child has practised a few times in a less structured way, give them the opportunity to attempt to write the tricky word on coloured paper with pencil colours or felt tips. We were very excited to have Trina and Lilian visit our classroom before Trina returned from maternity leave. We sang some songs for them. Look at how excited we were to see them!!! Thanks for visiting!! Trina now works in our class as one of our Team Teachers! Welcome Back!
This is a picture of Senior Infants with Hannah. Hannah is a student teacher and she taught us for 3 weeks in January.
We learned so much with Hannah. In our socio dramatic area with had our very own Space station. We created masterpieces in Junk Art. We learned a new song "When I'm 64" by the Beatles". We strarted Gymnastics in PE. We made rockets in Art. We had such an amazing time with Hannah. THANK YOU for teaching us. Luckily we still get to see Hannah around the school as she is now on placement in Claire's Junior Infants. We had a very exciting morning in our GP space. Shane introduced us to Olwen Carey who brought the Brendan Martin cup to our school. Olwen played mid field for the Dublin Ladies football team who won the All Ireland final in September. Our class prepared some questions for Olwen and she was happy to answer them. Our classmate asked "How heavy is the cup?" and Olwen invited him up to lift the cup. That was a great question!! It was a very exciting morning for everyone and we showed our support by wearing blue, waving flags and chanting "Dublin, Dublin, Dublin...." as Olwen entered the GP space! Thank you Olwen for visiting our school and inspiring us to become involved in sport. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement! In October we were learning all about 3D shapes-cube, cuboid, sphere and cylinder! Here you can see us working in pairs and groups to create a cube using lollipop sticks and masking tape. Firstly we had to decide how many lollipop sticks we needed to use. Then we had to work with our partner to decide how to start making the cube. This was an excellent example of team work and cooperation in senior infants. We made 10 cubes using lollipop sticks and masking tape and some of our friends then painted the cubes at the creative station! Our Magic Carpets which we created as part of maths and art were on display outside our classroom for the month of September. They really brightened up the GP space and everyone enjoyed looking at the display. We used lots of paint and colour to decorate the magic carpets. We also used 2D shapes decorate them. Here is one last picture of them before we took them home. |
